The Biggest Games This Weekend – October 12-13th

Below are the sporting events this weekend that I feel everyone should tune into. All times are Central Standard Time.

Saturday

1) The Red River Showdown – Oklahoma vs Texas – 11:00 AM (FOX)

Sooners vs Longhorns playing in Cotton Bowl Stadium for Big 12 bragging rights. These two schools are constantly battling for many of the same recruits every year. This rivalry sometimes produces some surprising results as a good rivalry should. Oklahoma is favored by 10 1/2 points. Texas leads the all-time series with a 62–47–5 record. I’d take the Longhorns and the 10 1/2 points even though I think the Sooners will come out on top this contest.

2) NLCS Game #2 – Washington at St Louis – 3:08 PM (TBS)

The Nationals will send Max Scherzer to the mound to face Adam Wainwright. Hey, this is for the National League pennant when everyone was expecting a Braves-Dodgers matchup. That should clue you in that this is a series between two good teams that have a little playoff magic. Whenever Scherzer or Verlander pitch in the playoffs, two future Hall of Famers, I will be tuning in. The Nationals are the favorite to win this series and I wouldn’t bet against them here with Scherzer on the mound. Take the Nats.

3) SEC Football – Ole Miss vs Ol’ Mizzou – 6:00 PM (ESPN2)

Many may point out the #7 Florida vs #5 LSU game at 7 PM and wonder why I didn’t chose that contest. Simple. I think LSU, who is favored by 13 1/2 points, will roll big. So I recommend watching the Ole Miss vs Mizzou game instead which should be a more compelling matchup if you like offense. Missouri is ranked just outside of the Top 25 in the AP Poll (27th in the last poll) and they can put up some points. The Tigers have scored 31 or more points in their last ten games which is the 2nd best streak in college football behind Oklahoma. But the Tigers QB Kelly Bryant (a Clemson transfer) was knocked out of game last week due to tweaking his knee. Just how healthy will he be? Missouri is favored by 12 1/2 points. I think Missouri wins but I’ll take Ole Miss and 12 1/2 points.

Sunday

1) NFL Football – Houston vs Kansas City – 12:00 PM (CBS)

A matchup of two of the better young QBs in the NFL with the Texans Deshaun Watson and the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes. Both were taken in the same 2017 NFL Draft in the 1st round. Mahomes went 10th overall, Watson 12th overall. The Chiefs are favored by 4 points after coming off a shocking loss vs the Indianapolis Colts last week. Mahomes was hobbled in the game so you have to wonder how healed his foot really is and his mobility in the pocket. The Chiefs are banged up on both sides of the ball. This should be a tight one. I think 4 points is too many here especially with the Chiefs problems stopping the run.

2) NFL Football – San Francisco vs LA Rams – 6:00 PM (FOX)

The San Francisco 49ers (4-0) are the only undefeated team left in the NFC. The Rams are 3-2, having lost their last 2 games. The Rams are favored by 3 points. I just don’t see the Rams losing three straight games but this 49ers team is better than you think. This one is too close to call. Take the Rams by a point.

3) ALCS Game #2 – NY Yankees vs Houston – 7:08 PM (FS1)

The Astros Justin Verlander faces Yankees starter James Paxton. As I said earlier, whenever Scherzer or Verlander pitch in the playoffs, I will tune in. I’d take the Astros in this game and the Astros in the series.
